ABOUT US
The "Hawks R/C Junior Aviators" is a youth program we just call
the "Hawks". We are made up of model aircraft pilots and builders from
the local area who come together to share the hobby of model aircraft
building and flying with interested youth in greater Oswego county
area. Our primary area of instruction is in Radio Control (RC) model
aircraft. However, other areas of interest include Free Flight (FF),
Control Line (CL), and even construction of non-flying model aircraft
is fine with us. The Hawks club and the flight training program are
both provided free of charge as a public service by members of the
Hawks club.
The Hawks program teaches kids to pilot a Radio Controlled or R/C model
aircraft. Along with hands-on flying, the kids also learn building
techniques, patience, safety, teamwork, and responsibility. Being a
student in the Hawks program puts you under no obligations or
responsibilities other than having fun and wanting to be around others
with an interest in model aviation. There is nothing you need to buy,
there are no strings, fine print, or hidden costs to be part of this
program. The program provides all the flight equipment the kids will
need to successfully pilot a radio control aircraft. The planes and
support equipment required for the program stays with the program
season after season. The cost of replacement, repair, fuel, and
maintenance activities is borne by the Hawks program.
As a result of the successes built upon by the flight training program,
the program was expanded during the Winter of 2004/2005 to include a
Winter construction workshop. The workshop begins in December and runs
into the Spring on alternate Saturdays. A “hands on” approach is used
to teach basic (and sometimes more detailed) construction techniques by
building from kits and ARFs. In addition, we repair damaged planes and
help the kids get their own planes, if they have one, “air worthy”.
Visit our photo gallery for pictures of all these activities! “One
picture is worth a thousand words!”
You may ask
“What’s different about the Hawks that sets it aside from other
“clubs”?
The Hawks R/C Junior Aviators is a program rather than a
“club”—intended to foster teamwork, a safety culture, and a learning
and growth opportunity for youth. We found that you can use R/C
aircraft training as a valuable tool. This provides a “fun” and
challenging environment to meet the overall objectives in helping our
youth mature in areas sometimes not taught in traditional schools or in
a home or “street” setting.
And the neat part—the kids are all encouraged and have the
opportunity to be right in the middle of decision making, teaching
other kids what they have learned, and even hold significant positions
of responsibility in the program. The AMA requires certain minimum
adult membership and officer positions—and the rules of incorporation
require a similar structure—and where a kid can fill a position, it
happens. This year (2006) two of the AMA officers are kids and one is a
Board of Directors officer. The adult membership guides, assists and
mentors—but we all rely on the active participation of our youth
membership as a significant driving force behind the program.
THINKING OF JOINING US?
Do you already have a plane? great, if you don’t that’s ok because we
do. If you have an interest in model aircraft flying and want to get
the most out of this hobby then you should check us out. However, keep
in mind the Hawks can only handle a limited number of students. So give
us a holler and see if there’s a place for you.
WANT TO HELP OUT? Are you a Pilot, Builder, or just a concerned
citizen?
If you live in the greater Oswego County area and think you would like
to help out with the Hawks program by all means give is a call. We
could always use more help. Not just with the summer flying season but
we also put on several construction workshops during the winter, so
give it some thought.
Want to start your own youth program? Although the Hawks home field is
at the Oswego Valley Modelaires R/C flying field off Chase Rd. here in
Fulton NY we are open to the idea of expanding the Hawks program to
other clubs, near or far. If you have a desire to start a youth program
at your club then look us over and if you like what you see then give
us a call and we’ll talk.
